Only A Remnant

Wagga Wagga Art Gallery 13 May - 20 August 2023

Only a Remnant explores biodiversity loss in the Riverina, centering upon the Box Gum Grassy Woodlands that once covered much of south eastern Australia and were the homelands of Indigenous Peoples including Wiradjuri.

Past and present local stories, both Indigenous and settler, of human interaction with the natural environment have informed my investigations. The exhibition is comprised of four related bodies of work.

These include the recreation of a colonial drawing room with digitally printed wallpaper and fabric I designed; a series of botanical paintings re-presenting 19th century lithographs depicting plants found in the Wagga region- now re-ascribed their Wiradjuri name; a series of framed oil paintings of endangered Woodland birds and three painted diptychs that offer contemporary strategies for preserving and re-generating Woodlands.

The production of the new works on display was supported by CAPO’s Rosalie Gascoigne Memorial Award.

Settling Installation

Against a wallpaper backdrop featuring the replacement of native Woodland plants by weeds- a chair upholstered with a fabric chocked with a bramble pattern appears to offer rest. These and the other objects in the installation question how insidious unexamined values which direct our day to day decisions may be concerning our impact on the natural world
